What began as an entry-level opportunity for Ali Jafri has evolved into a career-defining journey. Ali was one of five individuals who was selected to be a part of the Aecon-Golden Mile (A-GM) crew through the Golden Mile Trade Training Program, which is initiated by the Labour Education Centre in collaboration with United Way Greater Toronto, Four years later, Ali has earned himself a few promotions, from General Labourer to Foreman to Project Coordinator. We followed up with Ali for an update about his journey, including what the application process was like, what he’s learned on the job, how he’s evolved, and what it means to have the opportunity at Aecon-Golden Mile for four years.

The opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT on February 8, 2026, marks an important moment for Toronto.
