What began as an entry-level opportunity for Ali Jafri has evolved into a career defining journey. Ali was one of five individuals selected to be a part of the Aecon-Golden Mile (A-GM) crew through the Golden Mile Trade Training Program, which was initiated by the Labour Education Centre in collaboration with United Way Greater Toronto. Marked by steady growth, increasing responsibility, and a deeper understanding of the construction industry from the ground up, Ali’s journey with A-GM began through a straightforward process. Participating in trades training, obtaining proper certification and exposure to different construction trades all had a hand in shaping Ali’s career in construction. Four years later, Ali has earned a couple of promotions, from General Labourer to Foreman to Project Coordinator. We followed up with Ali for an update about his career path, including what the application process was like, what he’s learned on the job, how he’s evolved, and what it means to have the opportunity at Aecon-Golden Mile for four years.

What was the On Job Training (OJB) as a General Construction Labourer like?

The task was to install fibre-optic cables in homes. It sounded simple but involved hard labour and numerous technical steps. My responsibilities included site preparation, material handling, assisting skilled trades, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment. This role taught me the fundamentals of construction operations, site safety, teamwork, and time management.

How has your career progressed since joining Aecon-Golden Mile?

The time went by and through consistent performance, reliability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving, I was promoted to Foreperson. This transition marked a significant shift from individual task execution to team leadership. As Foreperson, I became responsible for supervising crews, assigning daily tasks, coordinating with site supervisors, and ensuring work was completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. This role strengthened my leadership and communication skills. I learned how to manage diverse personalities, resolve on-site challenges, enforce safety standards, and maintain productivity under tight deadlines. I also gained experience acting as a bridge between field staff and management, which helped me develop a broader understanding of project execution.

My progression continued with a further promotion to Project Coordinator, a role that expanded my responsibilities beyond the job site into project planning and administration. In this position, I support Project Managers with coordinating schedules, tracking costs, managing documentation, and liaising with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

How have you both personally and professionally evolved from your experience at Aecon-Golden Mile?

Over the span of four years, I have evolved from an entry-level laborer into a trusted project professional. Each role has built upon the last, shaping my understanding of construction from execution to coordination. I have grown more confident, accountable, and adaptable, with a clearer sense of leadership and long-term career direction.

I take pride in the progress I have made and remain motivated to keep learning, improving, and adding value to future projects and the organization as a whole.
