McCuaig succeeds Lisa Gonsalves following the 2026 Annual Meeting of Members, bringing decades of public infrastructure leadership to United Way Greater Toronto
June 19, 2026 (Toronto, ON) – Following United Way Greater Toronto’s Annual Meeting of Members, Bruce McCuaig was appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees, stepping into the role as the organization advances its work to fight poverty and inequity across Peel, Toronto and York.

Chair, Board of Trustees
Bruce McCuaig has served on United Way Greater Toronto’s Board of Trustees since 2018, most recently as Vice Chair, Finance and Treasurer and as Chair of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee. His involvement with United Way reaches back more than 15 years, beginning with the United Way Toronto Campaign Cabinet in 2009 and continuing as Vice Chair of the United Way of Peel Region Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2018.
A resident of Peel Region, McCuaig brings decades of experience delivering large-scale public infrastructure and public-facing services. He retired from AECOM as Senior Vice President in 2025, where he led the firm’s Canadian transportation business. Earlier in his career he served as Deputy Minister of Transportation for Ontario, as President and CEO of Metrolinx, and as an Executive Advisor with the Privy Council Office of the Government of Canada, supporting the establishment of the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
“I have seen up close what United Way Greater Toronto makes possible when partners, donors and communities pull in the same direction,” said McCuaig. “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair, and I am ready to get to work alongside our Board, our staff and our community partners to keep building a more equitable Peel, Toronto and York.”
McCuaig succeeds Lisa Gonsalves, who was thanked at the meeting for guiding the Board and for her contributions to United Way Greater Toronto since 2012. In that time, Gonsalves served as Chair of the Community Impact Committee, as Vice-Chair, and as Chair of the Board from 2023 to 2026, helping steer it through a period of significant growth. She will remain on the Board as Past Chair.
“Serving as Chair has been one of the great privileges of my career,” said Gonsalves. “I am grateful to a Board, a staff team and a community of partners who never lost sight of the people we are here to serve. United Way Greater Toronto is in strong hands with Bruce, I’m confident its impact will only continue to grow”
President and CEO Heather McDonald welcomed McCuaig and paid tribute to Gonsalves’s tenure.
“Bruce understands this organization at every level, from its finances to its mission, and he has been a steady hand through recent changes,” said McDonald. “His experience will be an asset as we deliver on our strategy and deepen our work across the region. I also want to thank Lisa for her years of service to this community and for the care she brought to the role of Chair.”
