WHY POVERTY?
Poverty is not having enough money to make ends meet. But it’s more, too.
It’s not having the opportunities or the resources to get an education or a good job. It’s not having the support you need to take care of your health and well-being. It’s not having housing options that meet your family’s needs. It’s feeling disconnected from where you live, from who you are.
Poverty is not having enough of what you need to thrive. And in a region full of prosperity, everyone should have what they need to build a good life and a bright future.
That’s why United Way is asking you to join us in the fight to end poverty.
HOW IS UNITED WAY FIGHTING POVERTY?
United Way fights local poverty by meeting basic needs and building strong neighbourhoods.
That looks like helping our neighbours put food on the table, find stable jobs, access decent, affordable housing and get the mental health support they need. And it looks like working with residents to build communities where everyone has access to opportunities and connections regardless of their income, the neighbourhood they live in, or their identity.
This is ambitious work. Poverty does not happen overnight, and solutions will not either. But hand in hand, we can address the challenges of today while building a better tomorrow.

Meeting basic needs
We connect people to the support they need when they need it by funding 300 community organizations that provide more than 650 programs across the GTA. That includes mental health hotlines, community gardens, supportive housing initiatives, career training and more.

Building strong neighbourhoods
We collaborate with community, government and corporate partners to reduce gaps in economic prosperity and to create, support and empower strong neighbourhoods. We do this through our community-informed research, advocacy work and ground-breaking cross-sector initiatives.
SEE THE IMPACT
Frontline workers, community experts and our neighbours share how United Way’s work is impacting individuals and whole neighbourhoods.
