I think in times like these it’s important for the community to come together to help people who are struggling.

Alice and Grant Burton love the vibrancy of Toronto—and they’re dedicated to strengthening the city they call home.

“We see homelessness and poverty, which are often tied together, as the key issues facing our community,” explains Grant. “That’s why we support United Way. We know its network of agencies is developing real solutions to these complex issues.”

Alice, an artist, and Grant, the president of Starcan Corporation, have supported United Way since Grant first learned about the organization as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters 50 years ago. He saw first-hand how vital United Way’s support was to the program and its young participants and decided to get involved.

Since then, he and Alice have become major supporters of United Way, powering a network of 280 community agencies across Greater Toronto. The couple is passionate about human rights and want to address the inequality they see daily in their city. That’s why they decided to rally others to join them in the fight against local poverty.

In 2019, the generous philanthropists created the Alice and Grant Burton Challenge Gift, which matched $1 million in donations of $1,200 or more to United Way Greater Toronto. Their incredible generosity motivated others to give, helping to tackle local issues and strengthening our region.

They’re hopeful that by inspiring others to get involved, they can create long-term change across the GTA.

“I think in times like these it’s important for the community to come together to help people who are struggling,” explains Alice. “That’s why we feel good about helping to strengthen the social safety net.”
